At least I think it is the Southern Hotel. It's difficult to tell when the signage has been gone for about a hundred years.
My research has shown that the only three story building in the town of Rhyolite, Nevada is supposed to be the bank. But this particular building is three stories and is laid out like a hotel. There's the grand wide staircase that we are looking at along with a large open area adjacent to it. And you can see remnants of what looks like a reception/check in area. So I'm voting for hotel.
What is probably not evident in this small image is that this picture was made with a medium format digital camera. Why should that matter? First, it's not as portable as the average camera. The digital back is about the size of six iPhones stacked up on your desk. So you don't have it with you everywhere you go. So it makes you compose pictures the really old school way, where you think things through before just machine gunning away on the shutter button. Second, it makes the most velvety smooth, vibrant, detail rich images I have ever worked with (and printed). This particular image was converted to a 16 bit per channel tiff image, where I used auto curves to see if I could wring some more contrast out of it. That's it. The native file size is right at 16 by 20 inches and 300 dpi.
From there it is ready to downsample and send to a commercial printer. Yep, I have to throw away half of the data by converting to 8 bits per channel, then convert to a jpeg file to have something the printer can digest and approximate. Even then, these are some of the most beautiful prints I have ever created. It's nearly impossible to convey in writing how much better these look than any other 35mm format digital images at that size. That's why I carry samples around to show people the difference.
